"AMBIGUITY SENSE OF REALITY" THE KYOTO SHIMBUN, DECEMBER 23, 2000
ne of the distinguished characteristics found in the pictorial works of today's young artists is some blurred, obscure way of representation, that includes out-of-focus images with indistinct outlines. That could be the reflection of the present social conditions facing bleak prospects both economically and politically.
Masashi Iwasaki has been creating a number of series of self-portrait works, making full use of computer-graphics and he presents this time, in his latest solo show, a new kind of self-portrait series featuring his full-sized yet ambiguous images, which evoke a strange sense of reality in our mind.
Consisting of 16 pieces, every work represented on an acrylic board in 170cm by 50cm and hung on the wall silhouettes his figure in various poses in black mosaic ambiguously. And as opposed to this black composition, a red stripe carrying a mucous - like pattern runs through every plan vertically. This striking contrast between the cool inorganic black and the hot organic red will make you feel the sense of reality of the day.

コンピュータ操作によって自身の映像をさまざまに提示する表現を続けてきた岩崎正嗣の新作個展には、等身大の自身の映像があいまいなイメージで織り込まれ、不思議な現実感を覚えさせる。
横50センチ、タテ170センチほどのアクリル板が16枚、壁面に張られ、その1枚1枚に、腰をかがめたり、身体をずらしたりした行為の等身像が、黒色のモザイク構成であいまいに浮かび上がる。その画面には人間の粘膜をほうふつさせる赤味のストライプが1筋上下に走り、あいまいな黒と対比される。黒のクールな無機性と赤の有機性とを通して今の時代のリアリティーが伝わる。

two-person exhibition "Dual Circles" by a painter and a computer graphics artist is being held at Tenjinyama Cultural Plaza of Okayama Prefecture.
Iwasaki's masterpiece "Abyss", in which red, white, and black lines swirl, is produced by distorting the image of his own blood and face into a circle. It is a self-portrait that grinds the shape of an object and extracts the emotions and vitality inside. It is an attempt to mix digital and physical.
Iwasaki talks about the theme "circle" as "an organic and filled form that is the opposite of digital." He entrusts his expression of himself to simple and profound motifs.

赤、白、黒の線が渦巻く岩崎の大作「アビス」は、自身の血液や顔面の画像を円形にゆがめて制作している。物体の形をすりつぶし、内にある感情や生命力を抽出した自画像だ。デジタルとフィジカルの混合を試みている。
テーマの「円」について、岩崎は「デジタルと対極にある有機的で満たされた形」と語る。簡素かつ奥深いモチーフに、自己の表現を託している。

hen it comes to the Yen, it usually refers to finance, but here it talks about the art of the circle, especially the theory of abstract painting. Masashi Iwasaki is trying a circular nesting work. It fits snugly in a tatami mat and looks like a series of undistorted craft concentric circles, but it is a digital art that repeats a quarter circle four times. When I'm worried about the cross in the gap, I also think of spatialism. Each of the four series is digitally converted. They are, so to speak, dress-up dolls in a circle, but when I think of a human society in which the same person has different personalities, a mysterious circle work with a human body embedded in the gap is recalled. If there is something lacking in this ring theory, is it Eastern thought that is summarized in the "Enso Circle Kalligrafie"? It transcends the world, and the circle is neither complete nor forever. Relaxed calligraphy has a beginning and an end. When I saw the dog spinning around without trying to hold its tail, I once thought that this was the "Enso", the incompleteness was eternal.

の話となると、たいていは金融のことを差すだろうが、ここでは浮世離れした円の芸術学、特に抽象絵画論が語られる。岩崎正嗣は円形の入れ子細工を試みている。ぴったりと畳二畳に収めて、ゆがみのない工芸的な同心円の連なりに見えるが、4分の1の円を四度繰り返したデジタルアートである。すきまの十字が気になると、空間主義もが想起される。4点を並べたシリーズは、それぞれがデジタル変換されている。いわば円の着せ替え人形だが、同じ人の姿なのに個性がちがう人間社会を思い浮かべると、すきまに人体を埋め込んだ神秘の円の作品が見えてくる。この円環論に不足するものがあるとすれば「円相図」に集約する東洋思想だろうか。そこでは世俗を超越し、円は完結せず、永遠でもない。肩を張らずに描かれた書には始まりがあり終わりがある。犬が尾をくわえようとしてとどかず、くるくると回る姿をみたとき、これぞ円相、未完こそが永遠なのだと思ったことがあった。
